Young Men's Institute records, 1855-1891.

Financial records, insurance policies, correspondence and telegrams and receipts of a private men's educational organization located in Hartford, Connecticut. The receipts document purchases of supplies, books, magazine subscriptions, fuel, services, and monthly salaries for various librarians. Included are a statement from the U.S. Department of the Interior that the Institute was a suitable depository for public documents, a roll of life members, lists of books purchased, and a cost list of magazine subscriptions. Corresponding Secretaries included T.M. Ives and Lucius Boltwood, who spent time arranging for scientific and religious lectures. Many of the documents were written by Caroline M. Hewins, a noted children's librarian, who served as librarian for the Institute.
